From Behind the Monument is a video created in Piedmont by Jasmina Metwaly, an Egyptian artist and activist, whose research reflects on concepts such as resistance, revolt, the collective body, the role of images and the relationship between vision and action. Metwaly explores the architecture of the Castle of Rivoli at close range, before focusing on the skin and the gazes of two young women, intent on watching the clashes on the streets of Cairo during the Arab Spring, projected onto a screen. Like the images, with their opaque weave, the voice-over also proceeds along intermingling layers, interrogating the position of the viewer: “Those who do not experience this fear, remain in the pathological safe zone, far from what is happening…”. The video was presented at the XII Biennale Jogja of Yogyakarta in 2013 and at the 64th Berlin International Film Festival – Forum Berlin Expanded in 2014.
