The History and Stories Lab is an environmental work designed in 2003 by Massimo Bartolini for the Anselmetti Chapel: a Baroque chapel that has been closed for years due to the progressive deterioration of the building, the last legacy of a vanished rural complex in the North Mirafiori district of Turin. The work of art stemmed from the request of a group of teachers following an educational project on the history of the neighborhood. The project’s key feature is a shelving system, designed to remain empty in the chapel and which continues into the rooms used as a laboratory and as an archive, with the practical function of storing the educational material. The floor of the archive consists of a series of backlit containers, intended to refer to the foundational role of the care with which “history and stories” of places are collected, preserved and re-read. The artist also designed furnishings that can be transformed to meet various educational needs, and a circular seat-cum-table set around a large Cedar of Lebanon tree in the garden. The chapel was renovated at the time of creating the Histories and Stories Lab, and was reopened to the public in 2007.
