Shores. Irene Dionisio
A documentary which tells two stories of compassion and civic virtue on two opposite shores of the Mediterranean, through the correspondence between Mohsen Lihidheb, a postman and intellectual in Zarzis, Tunisia, and Vicenzo Lombardo, a retired cemetery worker in Lampedusa, Italy. While searching on the beach for materials for his Museum of the Memory of the Sea – a true monument to the victims of migration – Mohsen finds a body which he decides to bury with dignity, without thinking twice about it. Vincenzo in Lampedusa shares this same sense of urgency, tending the tombs of the unknown people who he buried in the local cemetery years before. In the wake of the Arab Spring, as sea tragedies grow significantly, Irene Dionisio speaks of a potential dialogue, of deep humanity that contrasts with the obscene of current history. The screenplay won the 2012 Solinas Documentary Prize for Cinema and the SCAM Brouillon d’un rêve filmique bursary. Shores premiered at the Festival dei Popoli in Florence in 2015 where it won the Audience Award.
Un documentario che racconta due storie di pietà e virtù civile su due sponde opposte del Mediterraneo, attraverso il rapporto epistolare tra Mohsen Lihidheb, postino e intellettuale di Zarzis, in Tunisia, e Vicenzo Lombardo, operatore cimiteriale in pensione di Lampedusa. Cercando materiali sulla spiaggia per il suo Museo della Memoria del Mare – vero e proprio monumento alle vittime della migrazione – Mohsen trova un corpo al quale decide, senza porsi domande, di dare degna sepoltura. A Lampedusa, Vincenzo condivide questa stessa urgenza, curandosi delle tombe degli sconosciuti che ha seppellito nel cimitero locale anni prima. All’indomani della Primavera araba, in un momento di drammatico acuirsi delle tragedie del mare, Irene Dionisio ci parla di un dialogo possibile, e di un’umanità profonda che si confronta con l’osceno della storia attuale. La sceneggiatura del film ha vinto il Premio Solinas Documentario per il Cinema 2012 e la borsa SCAM Brouillon d’un rêve filmique. Sponde è stato presentato in anteprima italiana al Festival dei Popoli di Firenze nel 2015 dove ha vinto il Premio del Pubblico.
